What I Do When I’m Not Reading (21 Hobby List Ideas)

What I Do When I’m Not Reading (21 Hobby List Ideas)

I love to read. I love building my book collection more. But, I do a lot more than just thumbing through pages endlessly. I thought it would be fun to share with you what I do when I’m not reading and also provide you some hobby list ideas I came up with. It’s nothing original but it will be a mix of what I like to do and some things I would like to do.

When I’m not reading, I like to be outside. I love to go on walks, get in the car and go somewhere, swim, hang out with my boyfriend, draw/paint, and listen to music. My boyfriend and I joke that I’m like a dog because of how much I like to go on walks and get in the car to go places. I think it’s hilarious, but really who doesn’t like to get outside at least some of the time?

Okay, I’ve done enough babbling, check out my curated list of hobbies that you can try out!

Okay, so I gave you the quick list, but now, let’s get into the details!

Reach 10,000 steps

What I do when im not reading-21 hobby list ideas-picture of fitbit-purple shelf club

The hardest way to do that would be to count in your head, but who wants to do that? I make it a goal to walk the 10,000 steps people say you should walk. Of course, this doesn’t always happen, but at least with my Fitbit, I can see how close I came.

I got my fit bit as a gift and I absolutely love it. I can track my sleep, heart rate, and steps. I’m sure there is a lot more I can do with it to, but those are the main ones for me.

The only unfortunate thing I have come across is that I now have a weird tan line for where I keep my Fitbit on my wrist.

If you want to be healthy, make it a goal to walk 10,000 steps every day! I promise it isn’t as easy as it sounds unless you do something that keeps you on your feet all day. If you want to get the same one I wear religiously, it’s called the Fitbit Charge 3.

Discover new trails and beaches

This is a hobby that I love to do! I usually walk around my neighborhood, but occasionally I like to see some new scenery. So, I will usually pull out the trusted Google and find some new trail to try out.

My new favorite right now has a trail that feels never-ending because I can see nothing but trees. If you do a google search, it says there are over 40 miles of multi-use trails!

I, unfortunately, I haven’t taken any pictures, but the next time I do I will update this post with a picture! I often forget about my phone when I go to do things like this, but I will try and think of it next time.

Geocaching

Okay, so this is a new hobby that I want to try. I even downloaded the app! If you don’t know what it is, well that’s okay because I didn’t either.

Basically, it’s like grown-up treasure hunting. If you download the app, there is a map with a bunch of green markers over a general area. A geocache is a container full of goodies.

If you click on the green marker, you have to read the description for hints about where to find the container. Then once you find it, there will sometimes be a book for you to sign your name in it.

There are a lot of rules but one of the big ones is that if you take something from the container, you have to put something in its place of equal or greater value. I haven’t tried this yet, but I think it will be a fun date idea for me and my boyfriend to do when we don’t know what to do.

Work out with a work out buddy

If you are like me, then it is difficult for you to work out by yourself. Because of this, I think a good idea would be to get motivation from a friend. That way you guys can push each other to stay fit! Let me know in the comments if you have a work out buddy.

Add and cross off items on your bucket list

How many of you have an actual bucket list? Like one that is written out? Well, you should! Get a pen and paper or pull up your notes on your phone and create a bucket list.

Make it a goal of yours to do at least one of the things on your bucket list by the end of the year. And to keep it full, every time you cross off one of your items, add one more. That way you will have endless fun!

Draw/paint

Now, this is one I do already. If you follow me on Instagram (you are following me aren’t you? Don’t be a creep and follow me in real life though), then you probably have caught glimpses of a couple of my paintings.

I have been drawing since I was in grade school but I have only recently picked up a paintbrush. By recent, I mean within the last year or so.

It is a lot of fun and I’m really proud of some of the paintings I have done. You could be too, look up some YouTube videos or just give it a go and see what you are capable of!

Learn to read music

This one is something I plan on doing. There are apps and books and even people I’m sure that can help. I just haven’t done it yet.

One of the things on my bucket list is to learn to play the violin and the piano. Those are my favorite instruments. I look at music as another so really this hobby could pertain to learning Spanish, Japanese, Gaelic, etc. Push yourself and learn something new! It can’t hurt.

Learn to play an instrument

Okay, so this kind of goes in step with the last one. But, if you are a music lover, then why not? Instead of just listening, you could be creating and that sounds really cool to me.

Start a blog like me!

blogging-what i do when i'm not reading-21 hobby list ideas-purple shelf club

Loads of people blog for loads of reasons. But one of those reasons should be because its fun. I get to connect with the world and talk to you guys! Without this blog, I wouldn’t know about a lot of people.

If you have a passion, or love talking about a specific topic, or if you just want to talk about your life, then a blog is perfect. Have fun and start one just like me! If you want to get started, I get hosting through SiteGround and I love them so far. I haven’t had any problems.

My first tip to you would be to give blogging a good 6 months before you decide if it’s for you or not (learn more of my blogging tips here). If you want more tips or have questions, let me know and I will write some posts to help you!

Create apps

I tried this one out, but ultimately it just wasn’t for me. You can actually do it for free through android studio (not an affiliate link). And, there are plenty of videos and how-to’s if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Have fun with it and try making a game. Or if you have an app idea already, why not make the jump and try making it a reality?

Complete 30-day challenges

I love these so much. I do challenges all the time. Some of them are fun (like doing yoga, or writing every day) and some are serious (like using less social media, or getting more sleep). You can find a lot of challenges on Pinterest or even Google.

I even have a challenge if you want to get started today! It’s a reading challenge to help you get to reading 100 pages every day! For me, this was a struggle because I am a slow reader, I love to read, but I never put in the time.

I know too many people who have a similar story. Well, stop the madness! Subscribe to my bi-weekly newsletter and get your free reading challenge today!

Go to poetry slams

This I would like to do one day. I enjoy watching clips from poetry slams on Youtube but I have never been to a poetry slam in person before. I think this would be a great little hobby for anyone who enjoys poetry or just wants to get out of the house every once in a while.

Write a book

Okay, so if you do this, you will quickly learn its more than a hobby, its a job. But have fun with it! I only say it will be more like a job because there is a lot of work that goes into writing a book and putting it out into the world.

Although, you could write a book just for you and not publish it. That is definitely a possibility. I tend to get ideas from reading.

Currently, I have three book ideas. One idea came from when I was reading, and two came from real-life situations that happened. One day I’ll finish them, but those are merely works in progress.

I do not plan on being an author full time or anything. I just had ideas I wanted to put to paper. Let me know if this hobby list idea strikes your fancy. Who knows, maybe one day I will end up being your editor or writing a review for it right here on my blog!

Make crafts

This was a big hobby of mine as a kid but you can do it now as an adult too! That’s what stores like Hobby Lobby are for. Get creative and make a cool design on your table (I actually did this recently) or make your own pillow cases.

The ideas for crafts are endless. There are even blogs that write about this sort of thing so you are sure to find something cool to do on one of those.

Gardening

What i do when im not reading-21 hobby list ideas-picture of flowers-purple shelf club

Oh how I wish I had the space for a garden. Right now I live in an apartment and all I have is a balcony. So I have some flowers, but nothing like a full blown garden.

This year I found some really cool flowers that remind me of something that would come straight out of a Dr. Seuss book. Picture right there—–>

If you have the space, I’d say give it a go! Find some pretty flowers or veggies/fruits and get your hands dirty.

Pottery

I want to try this one day! It looks like fun and even if you just go to a pottery class every once in a while, at least you are spewing creativity somewhere.

Go camping

I like to do this. But, camping can mean different things depending on who you are talking to. Is camping in a tent or in a cabin? Really, they both are but I like both. What about you?

Go to flea markets or antique stores

This isn’t for everyone but I think of it a lot like the geocaching I mentioned above. I love older furniture and books but there is so much to explore. It works out well if you are a collector too!

Start a Youtube Channel

So, let’s say you like talking in front of camera more than typing on a keyboard. Instead of starting a blog like I mentioned earlier, you could start a YouTube channel! You could vlog, start a booktube, or anything really. Starting a channel is just like an outlet for you to talk about what interests you and the bonus is you will find people with similar interest!

Learn how to dance

This one is more of a bucket list item for me too. I would love to take dance classes and just have fun! I love music, so the more incorporated in it I can be the better. Plus, it’s a great workout.

Learn how to use your hands

Now this can be for anything. If you are a hands-on learner then this is probably what you want to do. Find a hobby where you have to use your hands. This could be pottery like I mentioned earlier, or woodworking, or fishing, or making models of anything. The list goes on and on.

Honorable Mentions

I think all of the above hobbies would be fun, but there are a couple extras I thought I should mention that probably aren’t as popular but still sound cool to me. I think it would be loads of fun to go to an opera one day and to make it a part of my hobbies. Maybe I could go once or twice a year.

I have always loved the idea of getting dressed up and seeing the inside of a fancy opera house in person. Another cool idea would be to go to the spa. I’ve never done it and I’m not sure if I’d like it (i get really bored getting my nails done when/if I go) but it would still be worth a try.

Lastly, I think it would be neat to try riding a motorcycle. My boyfriend rides (he’s a huge moto GP fan) and I go to the track with him almost every time but I have never actually tried it myself. He keeps asking to teach me and I keep saying no, but maybe one day I’ll change my mind!

Let’s Talk About It!

So, you got to know me a little more and you got to see what I like to do when I’m not reading. But I gave you these hobby list ideas to help you and to learn a little more about you guys! What hobbies would be in your honorable mentions? Would you try any of these 21 ideas out? What do you like to do when you are not reading? Let me know in the comments below!

With love,

Alexis

  1. I think visiting an antique store and discovering new trails and beaches might be my favorite ones on this list. Geocaching also caught my attention. I’ve never heard of it before, but I might look into it soon.

  2. Lots of fun ideas! I do have a bucket list, but I really need to update it. I started dancing in my 20’s (never danced growing up) and I love it. I take tap and hip hop classes – and I’ve done jazz too. I’m also a big crafting fan. I’m not always the BEST at it, but it’s a fun way to be creative. I also have lots of book ideas and I really do need to start writing again. I used to be so much better at it. lol

  3. The 10,000 step part is very interesting to me because I am looking for ways to start exercising again. I haven’t really exercised like I should since high school and I have graduated college twice, so you know that’s pretty bad lol. I will definitely have to look into that. Thanks for sharing – Josie xxx

    1. Hi,

You’re welcome! I’m glad I could help in some way! I love being able to track my steps because I look at it like a little progress bar. It’s a very good form of motivation:)
